Activision Blizzard Is Under Siege

Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI  ) is under attack.

Yes, the video-game company reported surprisingly strong sales and revenue for the first three months of the year. It even raised its full-year guidance on both counts. But shares still fell by more than 6% after management warned that the holiday season could be "more challenging than our earlier view."

Activision does have plenty to worry about. Starting in the fall, it will have to fend off major challenges against two of its tentpole franchises.

Infinite competition
The attack: First up will be a huge fight with Disney (NYSE: DIS  ) . The House of Mouse is cannonballing into the market that Activision created with its Skylanders console franchise. Disney will launch its competing title, Infinity, in August, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Helped along by toy sales that complement the gameplay, Skylanders has been the best-selling game in North America and Europe so far this year. Disney is aiming to grab some of that coin and is ready to turn the full force of its marketing machine to the task.

10 Best Healthcare Technology Stocks To Invest In Right Now

The defense: But Activision isn't standing still. The company has a new installment of the Skylanders franchise lined up with an innovative twist that allows gamers to customize their toys for more varied gameplay. And while Activision doesn't have the deep catalog of characters that Disney boasts, it does have an established franchise and plenty of shelf space at retailers already locked in and ready for the fight.

Ghost in the machine
The attack: Next up will be the holiday slugfest against Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA  ) . EA is timing the release of Battlefield 4 to go head-to-head with Activision's Call of Duty launch this year. The previous installment of Battlefield sold a quick 10 million copies, so it should make for some very tough competition against Activision's biggest brand.

The defense: Still, Activision is hoping that a fresh take on the Call of Duty franchise will keep it on top. Call of Duty: Ghosts takes the series in an entirely new direction, with new characters and an all-new story. And its launch will also be backed up by "one of the largest sales and marketing plans in the brand's history."

Next generation
Expect that trend to hold back profits for the company in general this year. All this extra competition means that Activision will have to spend much more on marketing to support its games. And that means it probably won't repeat the record profitability it enjoyed last year.

However, Activision can't afford to let rivals gain too much ground heading into the new console introductions from Sony and Microsoft. It has a dominant market position as this console cycle is coming to an end, but Activision will have to fight to keep it that way through the next-generation releases.

While Activision and Microsoft have been taking the headlines when it comes to console gaming, investors following the gaming sector would do well to also keep tabs on Electronic Arts. We can help. Pocket 10.7% Yields By Investing In Companies BEFORE They Go Public

Almost a year ago, it was all over the headlines. You couldn't turn on CNBC or open an issue of The Wall Street Journal without hearing about it.

Then, May 18, 2012 came around -- the day Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) went public.

It was the biggest Internet IPO in history -- even bigger than Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), with a peak market capitalization of more than $104 billion.

But as soon as the stock went public, it became clear that the party was over.

Thanks to a malfunction in the way Nasdaq's computers handled millions of dollars in trades, as well as allegations that the company and its underwriters were involved in everything from inflating share prices, issuing too many shares and even overstating earnings, the stock eventually went into a tailspin.

All told, Facebook shares lost more than a quarter of their IPO value in less than a month and lost half their value within three months.

While "the herd" was waiting to cash in on the runaway success of Facebook by buying shares as soon as they went public, the "smart money" was busy cashing out -- selling their shares to a frothy public that had waited years for a Facebook IPO.

Peter Thiel -- one of Facebook's first investors -- made nearly $1.4 billion selling Facebook shares when they went public. Thiel originally gave the company $500,000 in 2004, back when it was still known as "The Facebook."

And then there's the story of David Choe... an artist who painted murals on the walls of Facebook's office. Rather than take his fees in cash, Choe took it in Facebook stock. Choe's stake was recently valued at close to $200 million.

For these early investors, Facebook has been a goldmine. These guys are literally millionaires because of the stock.

So, what's the difference between these guys and the Facebook shareholders that weren't so lucky? They acquired shares of Facebook BEFORE the company went public...

Choe, for example, got his shares in 2005, long before the world was obsessed with newsfeeds or relationship statuses.

Back then, shares of Facebook weren't listed on any exchange. As you can imagine, for people like you and me, to buy a stake would have been almost impossible. Normally, these kinds of investment opportunities are reserved for "elite" investors and company insiders.

You see, as Andy Obermueller, Chief Strategist of our Game-Changing Stocks newsletter puts it, "the rich are different" from you and me. Once you understand that, you'll be on your way to incredible gains and outsized yields.

Case in point: While these "elites" and company insiders were cashing in shares of Facebook and making millions of dollars from what's being called "the worst IPO of the last 10 years," the rest of the public was foaming at the mouth to buy shares.

The question is, how can you as an income investor be a part of the "smart money?"

Andy has found the answer. It's a way for investors like you and me to get in on the action. Simply put, he's found a unique set of securities that let investors like us buy into some of the world's fastest-growing companies (including Facebook before it went public) while they're still in their most lucrative growth stages.

The answer?

It's a little-known asset class called business development companies, or BDCs.

Business development companies loan money to small private businesses in order to fund their growth. In exchange for the loans, BDCs normally receive interest payments or an equity stake in the company they're loaning to.

In other words, when you buy shares of a BDC, you're investing in a portfolio of the world's fastest-growing businesses... while they're still private.

For example, Hercules Technology Growth Capital (NYSE: HTGC), a publicly-traded BDC, bought more than 300,000 shares of Facebook when it was still private -- giving investors a stake in the company long before its IPO.

In a world where private investments -- only available to some of the richest and well-connected investors -- are at a big advantage, business development companies help level the playing field.

And while you won't become a millionaire overnight, the best part is BDCs are required by law to distribute 90% of their earnings to shareholders. That means if a company in its portfolio is acquired or goes public, the BDC has no choice but to distribute the profits to its shareholders.

That means BDCs usually carry rich dividend yields. For example, right now, Hercules is yielding 8.5%. And MCG Capital (Nasdaq: MCGC) yields more than 10%.

Here are a few more examples:

Of course with investing, nothing is 100% risk-free. And the same goes for investing in business development companies. But what might surprise you is that investing in a basket of small, private companies isn't nearly as risky as it may seem.

For one, due to government requirements, BDCs look to build a diversified portfolio where no single investment accounts for more than 25% of its total holdings. Typically, a company will hold more than 50 different loans spread out over 20 or more different industries.

They are also required to maintain a low amount of leverage. The government prohibits BDCs from acquiring more debt than equity. By law, the highest debt-to-equity ratio allowed is 1:1. For comparison, investment banks are often levered as high as 30:1.

Action to Take --> I want to make something clear. I'm not saying you should run out and invest every dime you have into business development companies. There is plenty more to learn about them before investing than I can include in this essay.

But there is no denying that with BDCs, you can share the same advantages as insiders that own shares of the world's fastest-growing private companies... long before the rest of the crowd even gets a chance.

P.S. - Andy has put together a special research report "Everything You Need to Know about BDCs," which is probably the single best way to educate yourself about these special companies. To learn how to get this report, follow this link.

Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer Know Who's the Boss

Meet the new boss in Silicon Valley, not the same as the old boss -- by any stretch of the imagination.

She's smart, assertive, strong, confident and willing to shake things up in a big way. Oh, right -- and the new boss just happens to be a woman.

Facebook (NASDAQ: FB  ) Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO  ) Chief Executive Marissa Mayer are putting their personal stamps on Silicon Valley, corporate America, and the ever-thorny issue of feminism in the business world.

Whether you like or loathe them -- or even care one whit about their gender -- nobody can deny their far-reaching influence on the zeitgeist.

And as the way we look at business has increasingly spilled over to how we appreciate popular culture, Sandberg and Mayer are occupying elevated places in our society. As amateur historians and sociologists, we don't regard either of them as merely old-fashioned executives who are tasked with the responsibility of enhancing a corporation's profits.

Sandberg and Mayer have demonstrated in full that each is willing -- and eager, for that matter -- to go against the grain and publicly make unpopular proclamations.

Sandberg, the No. 2 Facebook official and the author of the provocative best-seller Lean In, challenges businesswomen to act more assertively when they engage in salary negotiations than they have ever done before.

Meanwhile, Mayer demanded that her colleagues at Yahoo! suspend the time-honored, rather liberal Silicon Valley practice of working from home whenever they felt like it. Arguing that productivity would increase if colleagues spent more time talking and interacting with one another face to face, Mayer ordered her charges to work in their designated offices.

Now, neither decision is likely to turn the world upside down on its own. But that isn't the point. What really matters is that Sandberg and Mayer made the tough calls.

It is immensely significant that Mayer and Sandberg are showing that they are capable of presenting strong leadership. They both display what shareholders and employees alike should respect in top management: independent thinking by people capable of making tough, potentially unpopular decisions.

Sandberg and Mayer are demanding that women -- and men -- be accountable. Sandberg's declaration is likely to affect men in the workplace every bit as much as it might touch women. If a large number of women embrace Sandberg's suggestion -- that they get what should be coming to them -- then men will feel the brunt of their new negotiating posture.

But they will have to become accustomed to sitting across the negotiating table from a new breed of female colleague, one who will demand the money she has always been entitled to.

Whether Mayer is right or wrong in asserting that an employee's, and therefore a company's, productivity will go up by having people work in-house, is not the issue. She's setting the tone at Yahoo!, a company that sorely needs some discipline.

Anybody who has followed Yahoo! in recent years has seen an operation that has never quite settled on a coherent strategy for long. Executives have come and gone, sometimes amid great public scrutiny. This has further weakened Yahoo!'s image, especially on Wall Street, where the stock pickers look more intently for reasons to dislike a stock than for those to approve of it.

The executives and staffers should welcome Mayer's tough talk -- if a polite but firm request to work in your office should even count as "tough talk."

Only in Silicon Valley, right?

Top 10 Telecom Companies To Buy For 2014

The Bluths are back! Beginning today, Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) is airing a new 15-episode season of Arrested Development. More than 5 million have rated earlier seasons of the show, which also merits 1.8 million "likes" on Facebook.

Will that translate into a rush of new subscribers? I would say so, if only because Netflix's outsized first-quarter member gains appear to have been influenced by February's airing of acclaimed original series House of Cards.

George Sr., Lucille, Gob, Michael, Buster, Lindsay, Tobias, Maeby, and George Michael could be as big a draw, if not bigger. And that's in spite of Amazon.com's (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) substantial but thus-far ineffective efforts to create competing originals. For example,Alpha Househas just 2,839 customer reviews as of this writing, versus more than 385,000 mostly good ratings for horror seriesHemlock Grove.

"I would say Arrested sort of fits in an interesting category because it's got a very, very loyal fan base established," said Netflix Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer David Wells at JPMorgan Chase's 41st Annual Global Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference earlier this month.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Markos Kaminis]

Whether the stock is overvalued or not does not matter at this point, because an impact to its subscriber base due to the data sharing news would probably change market expectations for the company's operations and affect both earnings estimates and valuation multiples. It would probably drive the shares lower in my view, and I see no reason to risk that by holding the stock. Long-term holders, of course, have tax considerations to consider, and the news is still filing out. If Verizon's peers are also implicated clearly, perhaps with the aid of a Verizon PR push, this issue would be effectively mitigated. Though even in that case, there could be market share loss by all major American firms, with companies like T-Mobile US (TMUS) and Virgin Media (VMED) benefiting, whether they have also been involved or not. In any event, for new stakeholders, or those willing to deal with tax implications; or for those interested in a potential short opportunity, I would sell the stock today. I see no reason to bear risk while this issue and its implications are still unraveling, and while VZ has thus far not been significantly discounted for it.

Top 10 Airline Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Ever heard of the butterfly effect? You know, the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings in Liberia today might cause a hurricane in Brazil next week? There's a live demonstration of that ripple effect going on right now.

Earlier today, a Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) 787 Dreamliner caught fire while parked and unoccupied at London's Heathrow airport. Boeing has not yet explained what caused the fire aboard this Ethiopian Airlines plane, but Dreamliners have suffered internal fires before due to faulty batteries. The battery issue kept Dreamliners grounded for three months, and Boeing couldn't deliver any new planes until the battery system was redesigned.

So there's reason to believe that something might be amiss with the 787 again, which would be bad news for Boeing indeed.

The fire didn't just damage some expensive airline property, but splashed collateral damage all over the place. Heathrow -- one of the world's busiest airports -- was shut down for about an hour, judging by Heathrow's official Twitter feed. Boeing shares have plunged 3.2% as of 1:50 p.m. EDT due to fears of another sales halt, erasing much of the recent share-price recovery. In the process, Boeing shaved 26 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) , single-handedly turning the index's gains into minor losses.

AP NEW YORK -- American Airlines and US Airways (LCC) have cleared the last major hurdle to merging, now that the Justice Department has agreed to the deal if they scale back their combined footprint in some major airports. But it will be several months -- if not years -- before passengers see any significant impact from a union that will create the world's biggest airline. Passengers with existing tickets on American or US Airways -- and members of both frequent flier programs -- shouldn't fret. No changes will come immediately. Since announcing the deal in February, the two airlines have been working behind the scenes to try and make the merger as seamless as possible. Following Tuesday's agreement with the Justice Department, the two airlines said they expect the deal to close in December. But that doesn't mean everything will happen overnight. When the deal does close, here's what passengers can expect: Airfares During the past five years, the airline industry has seen the combinations of Delta (DAL) with Northwest, United (UAL) with Continental and Southwest Airlines (LUV) with AirTran. The price of a domestic round-trip flight has climbed more than 15 percent since 2009, when adjusted for inflation, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The merger will give a combined American and US Airways Group Inc. the ability to increase fares. United, Delta and Southwest would be likely to follow. Although it could also pave the way for further expansion by discount airlines such as Spirit Airlines (SAVE) and Allegiant Travel (ALGT). Frequent Flier Miles Your miles will be safe. After the merger closes, the two airlines will likely combine the miles into one program and elite status from one airline will likely be honored on the other. That puts the occasional traveler closer to rewards. The merged carrier will continue American's participation in the OneWorld alliance, which was founded by American, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qant

At 9.5 times forward earnings, Alaska Air is priced far cheaper than another grower,Allegiant Air Travel Group (NASDAQ: ALGT  ) , which trades at more than 14 times earnings. Allegiant Air does operate a large travel booking service, which may warrant higher valuations, but the core airline business does not have as attractive long-term metrics as Alaska Air's. Another favorite among investors and travelers, JetBlue, trades much closer to Alaska Air at 9.4 times forward earnings. I like both companies, but am more attracted to Alaska's growth prospects as it is still mainly a West Coast airline with plenty of room for expansion.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources such as Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

>>5 Stock Setting Up to Soar Higher

These "most active" names are the most heavily traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

Archer-Daniels-Midland

Nearest Resistance: N/A

Nearest Support: $45

Catalyst: Wild Flavors Acquisition

Shares of agribusiness Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) are up 1.4% as I write this afternoon, buoyed by news of the firm's biggest acquisition ever: the $3 takeover of natural food ingredient maker Wild Flavors. ADM shareholders are reacting well to the pricey purchase: they're bidding ADM up to new all-time highs today.

From a technical standpoint, ADM looks bullish thanks to the new high-water mark set in shares. Prior resistance at $45 should provide a reasonably strong support level now that it's been taken out. If you decide to jump into ADM here, the 50-day moving average is a logical place to keep a protective stop; it's been a good proxy for support over the last two months.

PetSmart

Nearest Resistance: $70

Nearest Support: $60

Catalyst: Activist Buy

PetSmart (PETM) is getting some carryover today from Thursday's 12.5% session, the result of news that hedge fund Jana Partners had taken a 9.9% activist stake in shares of the pet supply retailer. PetSmart management responded to the activist position announcement by saying that the firm would review its capital structure to find more ways to return value to shareholders. Now investors are speculating that Jana's involvement could help to drive returns in the second half of 2014.

For now, there's an intermediate upside barrier at the $70 level. That resistance level has been a price ceiling for shares since early April, and that makes it a level worth waiting to see get taken out before new buyers jump in.

For traders looking for extra reasons to like this name, PetSmart also happens to be one of this week's Rocket Stocks.

BlackBerry

Nearest Resistance: N/A

Nearest Support: $11

Catalyst: R&D Sale

BlackBerry (BBRY) is up more than 5.3% this afternoon, thanks to carryover from the firm's sale of its German R&D division to carmaker Volkswagen. The sale puts BBRY one step closer to profitability as the firm restructures its operations, and it also potentially gives BlackBerry a big partner in VW. Last week's sale news might have been the catalyst for the upside in BBRY, but the technical setup is propelling shares today.

BBRY is shoving its way through an important prior resistance level at $11 this afternoon, sending a very buyable breakout signal to traders. The next-lowest support level at $9.50 looks like a good place to keep a protective stop.

Arena Pharmaceuticals

Nearest Resistance: $5.75

Nearest Support: $4

Catalyst: Insider Selling

Last up is Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA), a $1.2 billion biopharma stock that's getting shellacked to the tune of 9% on the heels of big insider selling. According to filings, CEO Jack Lief sold nearly a quarter million shares of the pharma stock, an amount that added up to 40% of his holdings in shares of Arena. The share sale was part of a pre-arranged trading plan, but that's not stopping it from inspiring a selloff in Arena.

ARNA spent most of 2014 forming a long-term descending triangle pattern, a bearish price setup formed by horizontal support at $5.75 and downtrending resistance to the downside. Today's breakdown through $5.75 is triggering a sell signal in this stock. In other words, there's a lot more downside potential left in ARNA even after today's big decline. Look for shares to hit the brakes closer to $4.

Top 10 Promising Stocks For 2014

Homebuilders were no doubt the biggest beneficiary of the Fed's bond-buying policy and one of the strongest performers last year. But more recently, fears over rising rates have kept the space under pressure.

Inside the Slump

Homebuilders suffered a huge sell-off in May, plunging close to double digits in that time frame and severely underperformed the overall market. This decline continued for much of June, especially after the FOMC meeting (read: Are Housing ETFs Back on Track?).

At the FOMC meeting, Bernanke indicated a slow down bond purchase later this year, and discontinuation if unemployment hits 6.5% at some point in 2014. The potential exit of this massive QE program has led to the slump in most of the homebuildersstocks.

Rising mortgage rates could severely impact the current housing recovery and raise concerns on the demand for new homes and the homebuildersprofit margin.

Will Solid Data Help?

However, an improving labor market, rising consumer confidence and tight inventory are infusing bullishness into the sector. The sector looks promising according to the recent solid housing data (read: Homebuilder ETFs Rise on Even More Strong Data).

Top 10 European Companies To Watch For 2015: Key Energy Services Inc. (KEG)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

    Equities Trading DOWN
Shares of Key Energy Services (NYSE: KEG) were down 6.51 percent to $7.32 after the company issued Q4 update.

PBF Energy (NYSE: PBF) tumbled 5.85 percent to $28.16 after the company priced secondary offering of 15 million shares at $28 per share. Gulfport Energy (NASDAQ: GPOR) was down, falling 6 percent to $55.66 after the company reported 2013 exit rate of 27,780 barrels of oil equivalent per day. RBC Capital downgraded Gulfport Energy from Outperform to Sector Perform and cut the price target from $64.00 to $61.00.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another energy player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Key Energy Services (KEG), which provides well services to oil companies, foreign national oil companies and independent oil and natural gas production companies. This stock is off to a modest start in 2013, with shares up by just 7.9%.

If you look at the chart for Key Energy Services, you'll notice that this stock has recently spiked higher back above both its 200-day moving average at $7.16 a share and its 50-day moving average of $7.28 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of KEG within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in KEG if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.75 to $7.96 a share and then once it take out more resistance at $8.04 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.03 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then KEG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $9.55 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give KEG a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10 to $11 a share.

Traders can look to buy KEG off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $7.14 a share or $6.83 a share. One can also buy KEG off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Merrill had been founded in 1914, so why did it wait decades to go public? The answer involves the New York Stock Exchange -- now part of NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX  ) -- which underwent many rule changes during the '60s and '70s. A long-standing rule prohibiting NYSE member firms (typically broker-dealers) from operating as joint-stock corporations was loosened in 1970. Following this change, a number of member firms -- but not the majority -- wound up going public to take advantage of fresh capital.
