World Money Analyst Update on Europe
John Mauldin
February 27, 2014
For the last two weeks on Thursdays we have brought you special editions of Outside the Box featuring World Money Analyst Managing Editor Kevin Brekke interviews with WMA contributing editors. We heard from Ankur Shah on emerging markets and Alexei Medved on Russia, and this week we wrap up the series with a frank, hard-hitting interview with Dirk Steinhoff, who covers the European and Scandinavian markets for WMA.
Kevin and Dirk are both based in Switzerland, and so they lead off with a discussion of the recent Swiss referendum on immigration. Dirk interpretation of the vote, which imposes quotas on the number of foreigners allowed to enter the country, is that it has implications for the entire European Union:
[T]he Swiss people basically decided that they want to control immigration themselves and do not want to give up this control to the centralized administration in Brussels. I think that this is a clear signal to the Swiss government that the Swiss people don want to give up more sovereignty and that they would like to see more decentralization in the future.

It's been a little over a month since Suntech Power (NYSE: STP ) refused to pay bondholders the money they were owed, which eventually left the company's Chinese operations in insolvency. The company isn't quite bankrupt yet, but all indications are that it's headed that way, because even Chinese banks want to liquidate operations.
- [By Travis Hoium]
Stick with quality
LDK Solar and Suntech Power (NYSE: STP ) have already defaulted on debt, and the most leveraged Chinese manufacturers may follow others into full on bankruptcy (Suntech's subsidiary is already bankrupt, but the parent company isn't). Betting on leverage and hope for a recovery in China is a dangerous game, and investors should stick with high-quality manufacturers.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
Timber! Shares of Rayonier (RYN) are tumbling like a felled tree after the timber real-estate investment trust missed earnings forecasts this morning, leading to downgrades from at least three investment banks.
Jim CarltonRayonier reported a profit of 44 cents, below forecasts for a 46 cent profit, while revenue came in at $384.8 million, well below estimates for $422 million.
Deutsche Bank’s Mark Wilde and team cut Rayonier from Hold to Sell. They explain why:
While recent commentary around RYN timberland and real estate operations has been quite encouraging, outlook for its Cellulose Specialties business (accounts for 72% of segment EBIT) suggests significant downside risks ahead. RYN said recent contract negotiations suggest a drop in 2014 cellulose specialties (CS) prices and slower transition to CS. Beyond lower cashflows, a sharp price drop could dampen bullish pecialty chemicalsvaluations that have been floated for the segment. Pick-up in timber & real estate markets may mitigate some downside pressure on stock, but they won eliminate it.
Raymond James analyst Collin Mings and slashed their rating on Rayonier to Market Perform from Strong Buy:
We are lowering our rating on Rayonier to Market Perform from Strong Buy as we expect concerns over a slower-than-expected ramp in incremental specialty-grade dissolving pulp sales volumes and 2014 specialty-grade dissolving pulp price negotiations will prove to be a near-term headwind for RYN shares. Longer-term, we continue to believe its cellulose specialties expansion (CSE) project sets the foundation for significant cash flow (and dividend) growth. We remain attracted to the multi-year growth prospects of this business and the barriers-to-entry competitors face to gaining meaningful market share over a sustained period. However, commentary on yesterday conference call made it clear that the timeline for Rayonier to realize the full benefits o

For perspective, Weyerhaeuser owns almost as many total acres in the Pacific Northwest as Rayonier (NYSE: RYN ) has in its entire portfolio, and well above the nearly 390,000 acres it has in the Pacific Northwest. Weyerhaeuser is also well above No. 2 timberland owner Plum Creek (NYSE: PCL ) which holds just 471,000 acres in the Pacific Northwest. These newly acquired acres really puts Weyerhaeuser in a league of its own when it comes to having assets in the strategic Pacific Northwest.
