Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Carroll]

Few biotechs were hit as hard as Achillion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACHN  ) this week, however. Achillion makes up around 2% of the weight of the SPDR Biotech ETF, and its 7.5% loss this week was a major reason for the fund's fall. This stock has failed to capitalize on the markets' surge this year, losing 10% year-to-date. The company only recently named a new CEO, lifting its former R&D head and chief science officer to the top job. Achillion's still in the developmental stage of its life and thus produces no revenue, and the company's cash burn makes it seem likely that more share dilution is on its way as the company looks to advance its hepatitis-C pipeline over the coming years. Until Achillion produces some meaningful results from that pipeline, this stock! will remain a risky play in an already risky space.

Achillion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACHN) rose 14.34% to $9.65 after the company reported that it has achieved 100% sustained virologic response rate from an eight week Phase 2 trial evaluating a ribavirin-free regimen of ACH-3102 and Sofosbuvir for Genotype 1 HCV.

Acura Pharmaceuticas (NASDAQ: ACUR  ) checks in on Thursday. Drugmakers use Acura's Aversion and Impede technologies to create abuse-deterrent treatments. In short, if an abuser tries to extract the active ingredient of a drug to heighten addic! tive experiences, Acura's technologies kick in to make the whole dose unusable.

ALKS-7106 for the treatment of pain has big potential as it encompasses a broad audience, but it'll need to overcome the common stigma of pain drugs with regard to easy abuse potential. According to the press release, Alkermes will be introducing newer technology that will make its opioid-based drug more resistant to abuse. It should be curious to see how well this performs as there aren't many successful abuse-resistant drugs, or companies developing those drugs for that matter. Acura Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACUR  ) , for instance, successfully brought moderate-to-severe painkiller Oxecta to market in 2011 (which it subsequently licensed to Pfizer) and a bioequivalent version of decongestant pseudoephedrine to market last year, but sales of neither drug has exactly taken off. Like with its MMF prodrug, Alkermes anticipates a mid-2014 clinical trial launch date.

AIG resurrects brand in financial advice industry

American International Group Inc. is once again embracing its three-letter moniker — AIG — as it looks to expand in the financial advice industry.

The giant insurer said Monday that it is once again anointing a broker-dealer and registered investment adviser network with the AIG name and launching AIG Financial Network.

The company is home to 1,400 insurance agents. Of those, only about 100 have a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Inc. license to sell securities.

As those insurance agents ramp up to get their securities licenses, they will become employee brokers registered with SagePoint Financial, said John Deremo, an executive vice president with AIG Financial Distributors.

SagePoint will expand to have two sides of its business, its current line for independent-contractor representatives and its new line for employees, which will operate under the brand AIG Financial Network.

“With this particular group, the advisers are largely not securities licensed. They are life-insurance focused,” Mr. Deremo said.

“Over the course of five years, we aim to have around 1,800 to 2,000 advisers in the network, with all [Finra]-licensed.”

The insurance agents operate under another AIG company, American General Life.

One big focus will be securities products that create retirement income for clients, Mr. Deremo said.

After the credit crisis and the market collapse of September 2008, AIG was one of the most widely disliked companies on Wall Street. It accepted an $85 billion bailout from the federal government, enraging consumers and financial advisers.

The AIG brand became toxic, and the company in January 2009 changed the name of its network of independent broker-dealers — FSC Securities Corp., Royal Alliance Associates Inc.and AIG Financial Advisors Inc.— to Advisor Group. AIG Financial Advisors was renamed SagePoint Financial. That group will maintain its name and business structure.

Mr. Deremo said that AIG has put the credit crisis and the fallout behind it.

“We monitor our brand among financial advisers and the consumer, and we have seen dramatic improvement in that since the conclusion of the financial crisis, particularly once we paid back the government assistance, along with a $22 billion profit,” he said. “The focus is on the corporate brand and one AIG type of approach.”

Hot Airline Stocks To Own For 2014

UBS analysts Darryl Genovesi and Raymond Wong explain what Delta Air Lines’ (DAL) disappointing update yesterday means for American Airlines (AAL), United Continental (UAL) and other carriers:

ASSOCIATED PRESS

[Delta's unit] revenue weakness attributed to weaker Latam yields as business travel declined during World Cup. We can see this trend in June agency bookings, followed by sharp recovery in July/Aug. American Airlines is most levered to Latam among our coverage.

Mapping agency bookings across American Airlines’ geographic mix would imply ~5.7% Q2 PRASM growth for it, followed by 4-5% growth in July and August. While our prior Q2 EPS estimate had incorporated some upside beyond this forecast, we are scaling back our expectation with our Q2 EPS estimate moving from $1.96 to $1.85.

Mapping agency bookings across United Continental’s geographic mix would imply ~5% Q2 PRASM growth for it, followed by ~4% growth in July and August, although our Q2 EPS estimate at $2.00 incorporates ~3% PRASM growth, high end of 1-3% guidance.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By El Torero]

The airline will undoubtedly pounce on the likely failings of rival companies, though this is also an area where easyJet will be eager to move in. Spanair is gone as is Malev Zrt, two former Ryanair rivals. Air France-KLM (AFLYY.PK) and Iberia are in trouble, among other European airlines. Ryanair will take advantage of such weaknesses in its aim of becoming Europe's out-and-out dominant short-haul carrier. As other airlines cut routes, airports are now looking to Ryanair to take up the newly available airport space. As a result of this, with "opportunities opening up in Germany, Scandinavia and Central Europe" in particular, Ryanair's deputy chief executive, Howard Millar sees the Irish company increase its market share from 15 percent to 20 percent before the end of the decade.

What a difference a mega-order makes! Recently, I discussed Embraer's (NYSE: ERJ  ) disappointing first quarter in light of its long-term prospects. At the time, I put forward that if Embraer could add another $1 billion-$2 billion in orders to its backlog, a missing puzzle piece would fall into place, making this company a persuasive investment candidate. Last week's announcement of a significant order from regional airline SkyWest, (NASDAQ: SKYW  ) , provides a $4.1 billion jigsaw cutout to complete Embraer's picture.

5 Best Cheapest Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Altera(ALTR)'s performance has been weak as shares are down almost 9% so far this year as compared to peers such as Xilinx (XLNX) and Lattice Semiconductor.

These three companies make programmable chips that can be bought by customers and then programmed according to their needs. But Xilinx and Lattice seems to be making all the right moves.

Not a Rosy Picture

Last month, Goldman Sachs downgraded Altera rating from "conviction buy" to "buy" owing to a belief that Altera could face some short-term weakness. Further, Altera quarterly report was not robust either. Revenue lowered 10% from the year-ago period and earnings dropped 24%. The company released the guidance for revenue of around $441 million at the mid-point, which was far behind the $473.66 million expectation.

Therefore, it seems like it all unstable conditions for Altera currently. However, patient investors might be interested in Altera with the stock trading pretty close to its 52-week low and being the cheapest among the three at 22 times earnings. The long-term prospects are not that bad, and taking into account the fact that Altera offers a dividend yield of 1.90%, it could be a good buy over the long run.

Why Low Oil Prices Could Be Bad for Jobs in America

|BUS0080.JPG|BUS|Business and Industry|Business & Industry|business|competent|dependable|employment|exteriors|factories|factory| Corbis Oil prices are plunging, and one byproduct almost everyone in the U.S. has noticed is the falling price of gasoline. In some locations gasoline has fallen below $2, and the rest of the country won't be far behind if the price of oil keeps falling. Most of the time, lower gas prices are seen as a good thing. They put more money in consumers' wallets, which right now can be spent on items just in time for the holidays. As a result, retailers and the economy as a whole should get a bit of a boost as long as prices stay low. But a side effect that shouldn't go unnoticed is the potential loss of thousands of jobs in the oil extraction industry. States like North Dakota and Texas have seen a boom in oil-related jobs, and if oil falls much further, drilling could dry up altogether there, pushing thousands back to unemployment lines. It's a repercussion that could have a big impact in parts of the country. Oil and Gas Have Been a Boon for American Jobs Since the shale boom began in earnest a decade ago, the number of people employed extracting oil and gas has risen sharply. As you can see below, the entire mining industry, which includes oil and gas and support services, has added about 360,000 jobs in the past decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Oil and gas extraction alone has added nearly 100,000 jobs, and hundreds of thousands more jobs benefit from this economic activity. Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics This growth -- except for a dip in 2009 when oil prices plunged -- coincided with a rise in oil prices, and for the last few years, prices have been hovering around $100 per barrel. If we're in a "new normal" for oil where prices are below $60, or worse, below $40, the industry could reverse the course of the past decade. Thousands of jobs could be lost if oil prices stay low for long. Where Jobs Would Be Hit Hardest States that drove the oil boom would certainly be affected, but so would large swaths of the country that aren't normally known for oil drilling. Below is a map of the location quotient for natural resource extraction. This measures which states have higher and lower than average exposure to the industry based on the national average. Blue is high exposure, orange is low. As you can see, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Texas are three of the most heavily dependent on energy, particularly oil. Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics The advantage for states in the South is that they're involved in the collection and processing of oil in the U.S. Even some oil from North Dakota makes its way to states like Oklahoma for refining. They'll be somewhat insulated because of this exposure if oil prices fall. Hardest hit will be northern states like North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska, which have expanded oil drilling rapidly in the past five years. The industry could be all but abandoned there if oil prices fall too far and stay down for long. The Other Side of the Story There are a lot of benefits to low oil and gasoline prices, but now that the U.S. imports only about 20 percent of the oil we consume, versus 60 percent in 2005, there's also a downside to lower prices. A lot of people's jobs rely on the growth in domestic energy production, and it's likely job cuts are on the table as drillers consider cutting back production. More from Travis Hoium

Top 10 Growth Stocks To Invest In Right Now

As if Sirius XM Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:SIRI) shareholders didn't have enough to worry about already today, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) have managed to make things worse.

There's no denying that Sirius XM Holdings is the king of satellite radio. Then again, it's the only satellite radio choice out there, so its status as the king of its market is a kind of de facto victory. Nevertheless, SIRI has steadily cranked up its revenue - and subscriber count - for several years now, and credit should be given where it's due. The days of (relatively) easy growth are over though. Indeed, 2014 may end up being the tipping point for the company, as both GOOG and AAPL become better equipped and better positioned to hit Sirius XM Holdings where it hurts.

Let's call a spade a spade. The bulk of the reason Sirius XM Holdings has managed to grow its user base to roughly 26 million subscribers, up from only 1.6 million subscribers in 2003 is its utility in automobiles. Its mostly-commercial-free and wider array of channel choices is just a much better audio entertainment choice than broadcast radio. And, with no other threat to that foothold in the automobile world on the science, Sirius XM's progress understandably went unfettered. What if, however, the technology to be a real threat to satellite radio (particularly in vehicles) existed, and was not only viable, but becoming cost-competitive? Enter Google Inc. and Apple Inc.

Small cap Checkpoint Systems, Inc (NYSE: CKP) fights shoplifting or retail theft and other forms of"shrinkthat costs retailers over $112 billion worldwide last year (according to a study funded by the company), meaning it might be an interesting stock to take a closer look at and to compare its performance with that of SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: XRT) and PowerShares Dynamic Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: PMR). Just how bad can shoplifting or shrink be for a retailer? Troubled retailer J.C. Penney Company, Inc (NYSE: JCP) has just reported that shoplifting took a full percentage point off the department store chain's profit margins during the quarter. Moreover and given that tens of millions of Americans are now facing higher health insurance costs thanks to Obamacare (which will likely impact consumer discretionary spending),retailerswill need to find ways to shore up their margins and bottom lines by preventingretail theft with solutions from company like Checkpoint Systems.

One company you currently won't find in Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK-A  ) (NYSE: BRK-B  ) investment portfolio is robotic surgical system developer Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG  ) , which is boasting a robust $18 billion market value. Although Buffett and Berkshire's bread and butter is the financial industry, it does dabble in the healthcare sector on occasion, raising the question of whether or not Intuitive has a shot of entering the rarified territory that is Buffett's investment portfolio.

Advisors' Opinion:

I wrote on bearings and velocity control products company Kaydon (KDN) in early March of this year, and I didn't see a lot of value at the time. As the year went on, that call looked worse and worse, as the stock climbed about 18% - well above the S&P 500, and well above industry peers/competitors like Timken (TKR) and SKF (SKFRY.PK). To top it all off, Kaydon announced this morning (September 5) that it had received and accepted a buyout offer from SKF valuing the company at $35.50 - some 45% higher than the price when I thought it looked only about 10% undervalued. So what did I get wrong here, and what can investors do to avoid a similar mistake?

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rural areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

Titan Machinery (Nasdaq: TITN  ) reported earnings on June 6. Here are the numbers you need to know.

    The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended April 30 (Q1), Titan Machinery met expectations on revenues and met expectations on earnings per share.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

    1. Titan Machinery will close lower on the week
Titan Machinery (NASDAQ: TITN  ) is in a slump. Analysts have been slashing their projections for the specialty retailer of agricultural and construction equipment. One would think that construction would be on the rise given the housing boom. An improving economy should benefit farmers. However, Titan Machinery isn't cashing in on the trends.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

I went out on a limb last week, and now it's time to see how that decision played out.

I predicted that Titan Machinery (NASDAQ: TITN  ) would close lower on the week. The specialty retailer of agricultural and construction equipment has been disappointing on the bottom line in recent quarters, and analysts were expecting Titan to post its first quarterly deficit since going public six years ago come Thursday. It did. The stock declined 0.5% on the week. I was right. I predicted that the tech-heavy Nasdaq would outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average. (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) . This has been a tricky call lately, so how did it play out this time? Well, the market saved itself by rallying on Friday. The Nasdaq moved 0.4% higher on the week. The Dow managed to close 0.9% lower. I was wrong. My final call was for Francesca's Holdings (NASDAQ: FRAN  ) to beat Wall Street's income estimates in its latest quarter. The rapidly expanding boutique operator has been posting blowout quarterly results over the past year, and I was banking on seeing the trend continue. Analysts were looking for a profit of $0.26 a share during the quarter, and it merely matched that target. That was close, but not what I had predicted. I was wrong.

One out of three? Bummer! I was an impressive 16 out of 18 over the six previous weeks.

    Clash of the titans
Where Wal-Mart got a boost from its earnings, Titan Machinery (NASDAQ: TITN  ) was slashed as a result of its financial report as profits narrowed in the fourth quarter and it missed by a wide mark analyst expectations.Even though it beat top line estimates as revenues jumped 29% from the year-ago period, Titan's per-share earnings came in at just $0.73, a $0.19 miss from what Wall Street was anticipating.
