Top 10 Tech Stocks To Own For 2014

FXstreet.com (New York) - The EUR/USD foreign exchange rate has seen its rally falter at the 1.3360 region Thursday morning during US trading, as this level has seemingly derailed any prolonged attempts higher thus far.

In the United States, Initial Jobless Claims (August 3) were reported at 333K, beating expectations of 336K. Moreover, Continuing Jobless Claims (July 27) yielded a figure of 3.018M, relative to a projection of 2.950M.

EUR/USD strategic bias

According to Karen Jones, an analyst at Commerzbank, UR/USD has started to erode the 2013 resistance line currently at 1.3327 - directly overhead lies the key resistance at 1.3346/1.3417. This is where the 2011-2013 downtrend, the 200-week MA and the June high meet and we look for it to hold the topside and provoke failure. Loss of last weeks low at 1.3188 is needed to alleviate immediate upside pressure. Intraday charts are suggesting the 1.3417 high will be tested, but that it is likely to hold.br>

In February 2013, it acquired the operating business and certain patent properties of MIPS Technologies, Inc. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ashraf Eassa]

However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail's GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that -- unless Intel is either using Imagination's (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC -- it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich's comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company's process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, product cycles in this space are short, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Anders Bylund]

Close competitor NeoPhotonics (NYSE: NPTN  ) soared 15% higher. Larger rival JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU  ) jumped 7.9% to become the fastest gainer on the S&P 500. If Ciena can beat its own expectations in selling Internet backbone equipment to a bevy of major telecoms, its chief rivals must eventually follow suit. JDS is only one month removed from its latest quarterly report, which sent shares diving 7% overnight (but all was forgiven a week later). NeoPhotonics also reported in early May, but didn't make any waves then.

This stock closed up 5.9% at $55.15 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 571,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 218,547

    Volume % Change: 173%

From a technical perspective, POWI ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $50.68 with above-average volume. This move also pushed shares of POWI into breakout and new 52-week-high territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $55.38. At last check, POWI closed a bit off its intraday high and volume was well above its three-month average action of 218,547 shares.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in POWI as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $52.60 and then once it sustains a move or close above Wednesday's high of $55.59 with volume that this near or above 218,547 shares. If we see that move soon, then POWI will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $60 to $62.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Steve Symington]

In fact, I had one such moment last year when I finally sold my shares of Inteliquent (NASDAQ: IQNT  ) around $12 per share after holding them for much less time than I had originally planned. At the time, the stock had already been beaten down from its 2009 highs over $30 per share, and I had high hopes that the company might eventually regain its former glory.

  • [By The GeoTeam]

The largest single event the company has achieved is the acquisition of Tinet from Inteliquent (IQNT) , which had been IQNT's global data business. IQNT provides services to telecom providers, helping them deliver their network reach. With the divestiture of Tinet, IQNT's major focus is the delivery of voice versus data services.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One network equipment player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Aruba Networks (ARUN), which provides enterprise mobility solutions. This stock is off to a weak start in 2013, with shares off by 11%.

If you take a look at the chart for Aruba Networks, you'll notice that this stock just formed a major bottom chart pattern, after buyers stepped in to support the price over the last month and change from $17 to $16.25 a share. Following that bottom, shares of ARUN have now started to rebound higher and move back above its 50-day moving average of $17.73 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ARUN within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARUN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $19.16 a share to its 200-day moving average at $19.63 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.12 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ARUN will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from May that started near $22 a share. Any high-volume move above $22 will then give ARUN a chance to hit $24 to $25 a share.

Traders can look to buy ARUN off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below support at $17 a share or below $16.25 a share if you want to give it more room. One can also buy ARUN off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

Aruba Networks (NASDAQ: ARUN) was also up, gaining 6.63 percent to $18.34 after the company reported upbeat Q1 results. Needham upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy.
